Did you know that before I went into youth ministry I used to be an interior designer? Before spending countless hours talking about prom dresses and boys, I spent countless hours placing furniture and selecting paint for various types of commercial spaces.
From time to time I still help friends and family with improving the design of their homes. One thing I usually suggest is: get rid of your clutter.
Sometimes we need to come back to a room and remove the clutter accumulating there. One accent color or one piece of artwork adds beauty and interest to any space. Resist the temptation to keep adding “more.” Clutter confuses. Simple makes a statement.
The same is true of our prayer life. If you feel stuck or overwhelmed, check for clutter.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
-Matthew 7:7
Real Talk Time:
Jesus says we are come to Him and ask. Are your prayers filled with many words? Are they uttered in haste with lofty promises and long phrases you think will impress Him?
Pray often yes, but keep it simple.
“And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.”
-Matthew 6:7
“Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.”
– Ecclesiastes 5:2
I encourage you to take an inventory of your prayer life. If you feel stuck, frustrated, or overwhelmed, clear out any clutter present and see what happens.

My mind is very cluttered and therefore my prayers are scattered. I have learned though, like you mentioned, that my prayers don’t need to be elaborate – He hears me and the Holy Spirit is interceding for me – for all of us! Since having kids, my prayers are usually sprinkled throughout my day as opposed to a dedicated time.
I love that you connect with God throughout the day Mary. I am in the same season you are and for “stay at home mom sanity” purposes I have to sprinkle prayer throughout my day as well. And it helps! Thanks for your comment and keep praying 🙂
