As promised on Tuesday, the Wonder Woman Wannabe herself, author Jenny Lee Sulpizio, is here with us today. Though she discusses several topics pertinent to moms in her new book, she is here to share her thoughts on a HUGELY important issue…
mom jeans.
Yes, you know what we are talking about.
Here is Jenny…
I swore it would never happen to me. I made a promise to myself—and to that hip, young teenager I once was—that no matter how old I got, or how many children I brought into this world I was never (as in ever) going to ditch my desires to remain fashionable. I had intentions of wearing the coolest fashions, the hippest hairdos, and keeping up-to-date with the most popular trends.
But that was before I became a mom.
Without realizing it, “Mom jeans” found their way into my closet, a minivan appeared in my driveway, and unbeknownst to me, grey hairs began emerging where brown locks used to reside…strand after silvery strand of them. Staring at my reflection in the mirror, I couldn’t help but feel confused (don’t worry this happens often). As I stood there, hands perched upon the spot where my waist used to exist, I couldn’t help but think, Do I really need to be consumed with my outward appearance? Is that what’s really important here?
In Scripture we find both Peter and Paul speaking about the need for female modesty within the church as well as the call to all women to not be so consumed with their outward appearance (1 Peter 3:3-4, 1 Timothy 2:9). After reading this, my confusion hit an all time high, guilt set in, and I had no clue as to whether or not I should donate all of my clothes to charity—and resolve to wearing nothing but housecoats and slippers for the rest of my life—or if a different, less drastic path was warranted.
Do they even still make housecoats?
Let me shed some light on this, ladies. You see, as we’ve begun to age, our priorities with our wardrobe have decreased in significance for the most part. Most days, we’re lucky if we locate clean, coordinating clothes, that don’t have residual formula, boogers, or other unidentified fluids lurking on them. To us, this equates as a successful outfit. But for me? Well, I desire something more than this. I want comfortable clothing that fits my body correctly. I want to wear on the outside what I’m feeling on the inside in a positive, modest, and appropriate way. It’s about bringing one’s personality out and reclaiming their individuality as a woman and a mom. We’re not defying what the Bible says, rather, we’re allowing our interiors to finally match our exteriors.
Yep. Dressing fashionable and practicing our Christian values can coexist as long as the former doesn’t take precedence over the latter. We can dress chic. We can look sleek. We can have a haircut with some style. We can even wear jewelry…and we don’t have to feel guilty about it as long as our priorities are straight. Fashion should never be our focus but Mom jeans should never have to grace our bodies either.
Amen?
