Hi friends! My handsome husband, Chad, is filling in for me today on the blog. Last Thursday I woke up with a swollen left earlobe. I know- totally random and very painful y’all. By the end of the day I found myself waiting in an “urgent” care waiting room for 3 hours. The doctor gave me a diagnosis of Cellulitis. Ouch! Since I am on pain meds and feeling pretty crummy, Chad is helping out with the blog this week. You just never know what he is going to write about next- the war, Disneyland, or zombies… he is versatile 🙂
Feel free to share some comment love with Chad below and enjoy the following thoughts from my man…
Zombies seem to be the rage nowadays. I have to confess, I am not a fan of zombie flicks, but I do have reoccurring nightmares where I am in a morgue or a funeral home. There are bodies everywhere and sometimes these bodies stand up and begin to walk around. Not the best image to see upon waking up!
Images of the “walking undead,” be it an old Michael Jackson music video or the latest episode of an AMC original series, could never compare to the likes of a real zombie. Did you know that zombies have walked upon the earth?
What would you have done in this situation?
“And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.”
Matthew 27:50-53, ESV, emphasis mine
Imagine for a moment that you walk the streets of Jerusalem around April, 30 or so AD. A man claiming to be divine is executed. A massive earthquake has shaken the city to its core. There are whispers of the dead walking the streets. Neither historical nor Biblical sources record any of the panic that we see in I Am Legend or Thriller.
The Creator was at work…
Or what about when Jesus told spectators to open the tomb of Lazarus, a man that had been dead for 4 days? Remember, the ancient Israelites did not embalm. Following death, the body becomes discolored after several days. The gaseous smell is unbearable, and the eyes and tongue of the deceased bulge out. And yet…
“[Jesus] cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus come out.’ The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, and let him go.’ “
John 11:43b-44, ESV
While the Gospel of Matthew remains silent as to the reaction of those who witnessed the deceased saints walking around, we know the reactions of the witnesses who saw Lazarus’ resurrection.
People did not beat Lazarus with a baseball bat or drive a spike into his head. They showed no fear.
The Creator was at work…
At a time when the dead walked, there was no fear because the Creator gave them life again. These were truly the “walking undead.”
Next time you see a zombie episode on your television remember the deceased has walked upon this earth. The Apostle Paul promises that those who have trusted in Jesus as Savior, will rise from the dead when He returns (1 Thessalonians 4). What does that mean to you? As a Christian, you will rise from the dead someday- and not with ragged clothes and twisted, decomposing facial features.
When the Creator is at work, there is new life to be found…
Because of Jesus, The Walking Dead is a cause for rejoicing, not fear!

I love the reminder that God specializes in bringing dead things (dreams, relationships) and people back to life! Feel better Tracy. Your hubby did good!!

Thank you Eileen, I am starting to feel much better! Remember to clean your earrings…sigh. I love how you added dreams and relationships in your comment… God can raise them up as well- in His perfect timing and for His unending glory.

Thank you Diane for your comment! I’ve read these passages many times before, and appreciate looking at them from this perspective. Thankful that our God never tires and never gives up on us too 🙂
